Curbelo Tries to Paper Over Marco Rubio’s Anti-Immigrant Record on Spanish Radio

On Spanish radio, Congressman Carlos Curbelo made a desperate attempt to rewrite the anti-immigrant record of this second-choice candidate, Sen. Marco Rubio. In an interview completed in Spanish today, Congressman Curbelo claimed that Sen. Rubio, “is not anti-immigrant… Marco Rubio risked his political career for Immigration Reform…

These wildly untrue remarks are just another consequence of the Trump Effect in South Florida. Congressman Curbelo first proclaimed that Donald Trump was a phantom candidate created by Democrats. Now Congressman Curbelo is endorsing  his own phantom version of Senator Marco Rubio.

“Congressman Curbelo must have endorsed a different Marco Rubio, said Jermaine House of DCCC.  “This phantom candidate Congressman Curbelo wants to manufacture  is not the actual Senator Rubio who opposes comprehensive immigration reform, DACA/DAPA, and one who supports a 700 mile wall on U.S. Mexican border.”

BACKGROUND

MARCH 2016: CURBELO GAVE INTERVIEW ON SPANISH LANGUAGE RADIO ON MARCO RUBIO

English Translation

10:45 Marco Rubio is not anti-immigrant, quite the opposite. Marco Rubio risked his political career for Immigration Reform, something he has been attacked very aggressively by many people in this country. Marco Rubio has been very honest and said the Immigration Reform that was presented in 2013 lacks support at this time and things have to be done differently. But I assure you that if Marco Rubio is President of the United States, during the first four years of his presidency, the immigration issue will be resolved in this country. To say that Marco Rubio is anti-immigrant, that he has not fought for immigrants since 2000 and who comes from a family of immigrants, I think it is quite dishonest and I think the ambassador,  if you ask that question again, will not answer that. MARCO RUBIO FLIP FLOPPED ON COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM

Rubio Originally Part Of “Gang Of Eight” Immigration Bill, Then Changed His Mind. “Back in April, Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., stood before cameras with the bipartisan ‘Gang of Eight’ and joked he wasn’t quite sure he was ready to sign onto their comprehensive immigration reform plan. ‘Actually, I changed my mind,’ Rubio joked to laughter as he pretended to walk away from the podium. ‘No, I’m kidding.’ But fast forward four months after the bill he helped craft passed the Senate, and Rubio’s not joking anymore. Instead of advocating for the comprehensive bill he signed onto, Rubio’s now saying a piecemeal approach is more ‘realistic.’ [ABC News, 10/28/13]

Rubio Called For Ending DACA, Allowing Deportation Of DREAMers. “GOP presidential candidate Marco Rubio said Wednesday in New Hampshire the deportation deferral program that has allowed hundreds of thousands of young immigrants to stay and work in the country has to end with or without immigration reform legislation. Rubio, a U.S. senator from Florida, made the comment about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, DACA, program in response to a reporter’s question while campaigning in the early primary state. ‘DACA is going to end and the ideal way for it to end is that it’s replaced by a reform system that creates an alternative,’ Rubio said while in Manchester, N.H. ‘But if it doesn’t, it will end. It cannot be the permanent policy of the United States.’” [NBC News, 11/14/15]
