DCCC Launches Radio Ads Targeting Ten House Republicans for Failing to Keep Guns Away from Suspected Terrorists

On the heels of yet another Republican vote to block consideration of a bill to keep lethal weapons out of the hands of FBI’s Terrorist Watchlist suspects, the DCCC is launching radio ads in ten Congressional Districts, highlighting Members’ refusal to close this dangerous loophole.

These :15 second radio ads will run during drivetime Thursday morning through the end of the week and aim to ensure that the constituents of these Republican representatives are aware of their refusal to address this national security issue. The ads will target: Representatives John Mica (FL-07), Carlos Curbelo (FL-26), Scott Garrett (NJ-05), Barbara Comstock (VA-10), Mike Coffman (CO-06), Martha McSally (AZ-02), Cresent Hardy (NV-04), Steve Knight (CA-25), Lee Zeldin (NY-01) and Bob Dold (IL-10).

Republican opposition to even debating the measure is particularly egregious given that over the past decade, according to the GAO, thousands of suspected terrorists on the FBI’s Terrorist Watchlist bought weapons in the United States. The vast majority of Americans, even gun owners, have long supported closing this loophole, which is likey to have only increased since the tragedy in San Bernardino and other terror-related events.

The vast majority of Americans support closing this dangerous loophole that allows suspected terrorists to legally buy firearms, yet House Republicans refuse to act. These radio ads are the first of many to highlight the reckless position that these vulnerable Republicans have taken on this national security issue. Families across the country deserve a Representative that will do everything in their power to keep us safe, rather than preserving status quo and protecting suspected terrorists’ ability to buy guns,” said Meredith Kelly of the DCCC.

Example Script:

Congressman Scott Garrett voted to keep allowing suspected terrorists to buy assault rifles. Call him at 201-444-5454 and demand he keep us safe. Paid for by the DCCC, dccc.org. Not authorized by any candidate or candidate’s committee. The DCCC is responsible for the content of this advertising.

House Republicans’ votes on four Previous Questions have repeatedly blocked consideration of Republican Congressman Peter King’s “Denying Firearms and Explosives to Dangerous Terrorists Act” (H.R. 1076), thus preserving status quo and protecting suspected terrorists’ ability to legally buy guns in the United States.
