DCCC Statement on Barbara Comstock Fundraising With Mitt Romney Tonight

As Barbara Comstock holds a fundraiser with Mitt Romney tonight, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee spokesman David Bergstein issued the following the statement:

“Barbara Comstock supports overturning Roe v. Wade, compared immigrants to FedEx packages, and was caught in an apparent breach of congressional ethics rules by hiding her work for Romney’s presidential campaign on her disclosure reports. In other words – Comstock and Romney should have plenty in common to talk about tonight. The bottom line: Just like Romney, Comstock is pushing a right-wing agenda that’s totally out of touch with Virginia’s values.”

The Washington Post recently reported that Comstock apparently “breach[ed] congressional ethics rules” when she did not disclose at least $85,000 worth of work for Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign and the Republican National Committee. Following this report, an ethics complaint was filed against Comstock with the House Ethics Committee.

BACKGROUND:

Comstock Failed to Disclose Work for Romney Campaign in “Apparent Breach of Congressional Ethics Rules.” In 2014, the Washington Post reported: “Northern Virginia congressional candidate Barbara J. Comstock failed to report that a public-relations company she owns took in a total of $85,000 in 2012 trying to help Mitt Romney become president, an apparent breach of congressional ethics rules.” [Washington Post, 9/05/14]

Romney and Comstock Called for Roe v. Wade to Be Overturned. .” On MSNBC, Comstock said, “…yes, I think Roe v. Wade should be overturned and the states should decide it.” According to the New York Times, “Mr. Romney has called for overturning Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court ruling that recognized a woman’s constitutional right to make her own childbearing decisions and to legalized abortion nationwide.” [MSNBC, 10/16/08; New York Times, 10/15/12]

Comstock Compared Immigrants to FedEx Packages; Romney Called for “Self-Deportation.” In 2014, Comstock compared immigrants to FedEx packages: “Fed-Ex can track packages coming in here all of the time, we can track people who are coming into the country and we can do that right.” In 2012, “Mitt Romney described his plan for reducing the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S.: “self-deportation.”” [MSNBC, 9/25/14; CBS News, 1/24/12]
