DCCC Statement on Republicans Abruptly Ending Town Halls & Ignoring Thousands of Their Constituents

CNN: Chaffetz “just announced time’s almost up, cutting his town hall by an entire hour”

In case you missed it, last night over a thousand of Congressman Jason Chaffetz’ (R-Spineless) constituents showed up to his town hall to share their views, ask him questions about where he stands on issues, and implore him to finally take his job as Oversight Committee Chairman seriously. At one point in the town hall, the entire crowd erupted in chants of “do your job”! Apparently, the constituents asking simple questions about why he will not investigate President Trump’s conflicts of interest and whether or not he actually believes in science were too much for the thin-skinned politician to handle. As CNN reported, he abruptly canceled the town hall an hour early and then refused to speak with the press.

Unfortunately, this is nothing new for House Republicans – Congressmen Coffman and Roskam were recently caught on camera at separate events fleeing hundreds of their constituents through the back door. Most Republicans are refusing to even hold town halls, causing their constituents to protest at district offices until they get the opportunity to speak with their representative.

“More and more House Republicans are facing massive constituent backlash in their districts after voting to rip apart the ACA without a replacement plan, defunding life-saving services provided by Planned Parenthood, and abandoning their duty to provide a check and balance on President Trump – and this is really just the beginning,” said DCCC Spokesman Tyler Law. “As Republicans continue to cancel town halls, sneak out of back doors, and run away from their constituents, the backlash will grow stronger and the protests will get louder.”
