ICYMI: Lee Zeldin’s Far-Right Wing Associations Hurting 2016 Prospects

Two Top Political Analysts Move NY-01 to from “Leans Republican” to “Toss-up”

As House Republican Lee Zeldin continues to face scrutiny for cozying up to far-right wing groups and leaders, his chances of keeping his seat are now appearing dimmer.

This week, top political analysis by the Rothenberg/Gonzalez Political Report and Sabato’s Crystal Ball moved New York’s 1st Congressional District from “Leans Republican” to “Toss-up.”

Since entering office, Zeldin has revealed his growing list of associations with a far-right wing leader and fringe groups. Last week, Zeldin announced his support for extremist Congressman Trey Gowdy, who supported shutting down the government over funding for Planned Parenthood, for House Majority Leader. Earlier this summer, Zeldin was a featured speaker at two events hosted by the Oath Keepers, an extreme right wing militia group notorious for espousing anti-government conspiracy theories involving martial law and anti-American concentration camps.

Zeldin’s associations with extremist groups and figures are now catching up to him. According to Sabato’s Crystal Ball, Zeldin “has not tailored his persona and voting record to his perpetually swingy Long Island seat.”
