On Immigration, Government Shutdown Just One of the Possible Overreactions from House Republicans

On top of Speaker Boehner hinting at a shutdown over action on immigration reform, House Republicans have also threatened to impeach the President if they don’t get their way – even though they have refused to allow a vote on bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform in the Senate.

At least five members of the House have specifically said that they would push for impeachment if President Obama takes executive action on immigration. Eight additional Republicans and 11 new members of the House have refused to rule out or supported impeachment.

So a possible shutdown is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Republican overreach.

House Republicans who want to impeach President Obama for immigration executive orders:

  • Walter Jones (NC-03): “Speaking with Breitbart News Wednesday evening, Jones explained that should Obama move to unilaterally legalize undocumented immigrants, it would be a constitutional issue, not an issue to be solved by restricting funding, as some Republicans have floated.  ‘To me a constitutional question means that we have the option of impeachment,’ Jones said, explaining that he thinks the best option to confront Obama’s executive amnesty would be impeachment.” [Breitbart, 11/13/14]
  • Joe Barton (TX-06): “A Republican congressman says impeachment would be on the table if President Obama act’s unilaterally on immigration by taking executive action to slow deportations. ‘Well impeachment is indicting in the House and that’s a possibility,’ said Texas Rep. Joe Barton on NewsMaxTV’s America’s Forum.” [BuzzFeed, 11/10/14]
  • Steve King (IA-04): “Wednesday on Newsmax TV’s ‘America’s Forum,’ Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said if President Barack Obama goes ahead with his plan to grant millions of illegal immigrants amnesty with an executive order that would trigger constitutional crisis that the only answer for might be impeachment.” [Breitbart, 10/22/14]
  • Marsha Blackburn (TN-07): “Impeachment, censure and legal action are all on the table as the House considers how to discipline President Barack Obama for his ‘imperialist’ conduct in bypassing Congress with executive orders, Rep. Marsha Blackburn told Newsmax TV on Thursday.”  [Newsmax, 8/28/14]
  • Ted Yoho (FL-03): “Rep. Ted Yoho (R-FL) told colleagues that the House should pass legislation with new steps to secure the border, and tell Obama if he didn’t implement it, they would impeach him.” [Breitbart, 7/25/14]
