MAGA MAR-A-LAGO MACHINATIONS: Mike Johnson and Donald Trump Scheme to Undermine 2024 Election

Later today, Speaker Mike Johnson – the “architect” of House Republican efforts to overturn the 2020 election – will join Donald Trump in Mar-a-Lago to discuss their plans to prepare for “The Big Lie 2.0” ahead of the 2024 elections.

Donald Trump is fully embracing a strategy of undermining our nation’s democracy for his 2024 campaign, stoking conspiracy theories and spreading false claims and demanding that the RNC do the same. Additionally, earlier this year, the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) transferred $2 million to the RNC’s legal fund to support Trump’s election denial. Speaker Johnson himself “was directly solicited by Trump” to overturn the 2020 election and has continued to spread conspiracy theories about the election.

Today’s confab will likely result in more of the same rhetoric that led to the events of January 6th: threats of violence against election workers nationwide and increased calls by extreme Republicans to defend the criminals who tried to overturn the election, disenfranchising the vote of millions of people because they don’t like the outcome.

Recent battleground polling from the DCCC has shown that, in competitive House districts across the country, a majority of likely voters disagree with their election extremism, finding their efforts to disrupt free and fair elections very concerning.

REMINDER: Speaker Johnson has a long history of trying to overturn election results he doesn’t like, using tactics he learned in his early legal career when he pushed frightening “fringe legal shenanigans” to challenge local elections in Louisiana.

DCCC Spokesperson Viet Shelton:
“Today’s Election Denier Convention in Mar-a-Lago is a stark warning for all Americans about how House Republicans are planning to try to win their campaigns: with conspiracy theories, lies, and voter suppression. The public wants a Congress grounded in reality working to defend our democracy, not peddling falsehoods to appease a wannabe dictator.”
