Paging John Mica: The 1950s Called & They Want Their Congressman Back

Mica Insults Working Women, Refuses to Condemn Trump’s Sexist Twitter Rant

After a poll last week showing the race within the margin of error and as outlets from Cook Political Report to the Orlando Sentinel have said this week, Congressman John Mica is facing his toughest reelection fight ever from former national security specialist Stephanie Murphy – and the pressure is causing Mica to show his true, out-of-touch colors.

In comments to the Orlando Sentinel, Mica said the following about his opponent: “She [Murphy] was put up as a strong candidate, but she doesn’t have much of a background in the community or in the professional world,” Mica said.

Mica, who has been in Congress for the last 23 years, has become seriously out-of-touch – to the point that he is suggesting that someone who worked as a strategy consultant at Deloitte, after 9/11 became a national security specialist at the Department of Defense, works as an executive at Sungate Capital; and teaches at Rollins College…“doesn’t have much of a background… in the professional world.”

The insulting comments come on the heels of an embarrassing MSNBC interview this morning where Mica, as a Trump supporter, was asked about Trump’s early morning Twitter tirade about Alicia Machado. Mica claimed that he not only was unaware of the comments because “I don’t read tweets. I don’t retweet,” he also said “I’m not familiar” with Machado, even though as Peter Alexander pointed out, millions of people learned about her during the presidential debate earlier this week.

“Congressman Mica is in the reelection fight of his career, and it’s betraying how embarrassingly out-of-touch he is with not only working women and families in his district, but the 21st century altogether,” said Christie Stephenson of the DCCC. “Mica’s apparent strategy of insulting his highly accomplished opponent’s professional experience and burying his head in the sand when it comes to Donald Trump just shows how out-of-touch he’s gotten during his decades in DC.”

TRANSCRIPT:

Peter Alexander: I want to switch to the campaign if I can, since we have you here. Donald Trump, as you’re aware I’m sure, is making headlines. Early this morning while most people were still sleeping, twitter tirade of sorts, going after Hillary Clinton, and the former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, calling Machado ‘disgusting’ for making what he described as a sex tape. You’re a trump supporter, are you comfortable with thirty-nine days out from the election the nominee on the Republican side for president taking this line of attack?

John Mica: Well there are some things Mr. Trump has said and other candidates have said and that I disagree with.

Alexander:  But how about, how about, let’s talk about the one that happened just this morning though. Thirty-nine days out, President Obama is…

Mica: I’m not familiar with it.

Alexander:: You’re not familiar with the tweets this morning?

Mica: No, and I don’t tweet and I don’t re-tweet.

Alexander:: So I [crosstalk] do you think Donald Trump should be talking about Alicia Machado thirty-nine days out, whether…I’ll just inform you, where he basically said it was ‘disgusting’ that Hillary Clinton had brought her into this whole deal and asked people to check out a sex tape?

Mica: Um…I’m not familiar with the individual you’re talking about specifically.

Alexander:: She was mentioned in the debate, obviously, that 84 million people saw that’s why I was asking.

Mica:  I spend most of my time working.

Mica: Well again, I just don’t know anything about her or his comments. Um, again, candidates say things in campaigns on both sides…[inaudible]

Alexander:: Trump is now suggesting that he would drag Bill Clinton’s past infidelities into the spotlight and make it a campaign issue out of that, do you think that would be an effective winning strategy?

Mica: Again, um, everybody runs their own campaigns, we have 435 members of Congress.

Alexander:: But you’re Republican, so what advice do you give him? He’s running for President.

Mica: Well, I think the most important thing again is to focus on what would make a difference, a positive difference in people’s lives. Folks are struggling out there to pay their bills, to put food on the table, to educate their kids. That’s what they care about, the future for them, their family and this country and making it safe and secure, so that’s my concentration, um, again I’ve got my own race to run, I wish all of them well. But I want my constituents to have the best chance for the future.
