Nonpartisan race rater Cook Political Report just moved Maine’s 2nd District in Matt Dunlap’s direction to “Lean Republican,” just one week after Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball shifted this seat to the left.
With two independent forecasters reaching the same conclusion in the span of one week, the message is clear: Paul LePage is in trouble.Â
Cook writes that the “race looks increasingly competitive, warranting a shift to Lean Republican” as “polls continue to show state Auditor Matt Dunlap tied with or narrowly trailing former Gov. Paul LePage.” Cook also pointed to a recent University of New Hampshire poll that showed Dunlap up six points.
DCCC Spokesperson Riya Vashi: “It’s clear Maine voters just aren’t buying what extremist Paul LePage is selling. Working families don’t want another extreme rubber stamp in Congress, they want a true leader that will work across the aisle and actually deliver results and lower costs. This November, Maine voters will soundly reject LePage and a real fighter in Matt Dunlap.”
