🚨 RATINGS CHANGE: Cook Political Shifts IA-03 to “Toss-Up” Race

Cook Political Report just shifted Iowa’s 3rd district in Democrats’ direction from “Lean Republican” to “Toss-Up” in just the latest sign that Republican Zach Nunn is more vulnerable than ever.

Cook writes in part:

  • “Iowa’s 3rd District is also shifting into Toss Up.”
  • “…Iowa Republicans are in a more complicated political environment this year. Trump’s tariff policy has had a disproportionate impact on Iowa’s agriculture-dependent economy, and the race for governor is competitive, with Democratic state Auditor Rob Sand at the top of the ticket.”
  • “…[Nunn] doesn’t have a record of overperformance that could help him survive a significantly bluer environment.”

This ratings change follows a poll from last year finding Democrats leading Nunn.

REMINDER: In 2025, Iowa Democrats overperformed in special elections by an average of over 22 points, flipping two Trump +12 and Trump +11 districts.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Zach Nunn went to Washington and all Iowans have to show for it is higher prices. Nunn voted to slash health care, rip away funding for rural hospitals, and raise Iowans’ health care costs; rubber-stamped reckless tariffs hurting Iowa’s farm economy and raising grocery prices; and gave handouts to his rich friends instead of doing anything to help Iowans who are hurting. Nunn is facing the race of his career and he will lose this November because Iowa voters have had enough.”
