| In case you missed it, firefighter Bob Brooks joined Pod Save America last week to talk about his campaign to flip Pennsylvania’s 7th Congressional District.
Asked why he’s running, Bob told the host: “I got tired of waking up in the morning feeling like I was getting kicked in the teeth by people that just don’t care about working-class people.”
Bob emphasized that “people aren’t looking for us to go back to the way things were 10 years ago, 20 years ago. They want something better” – which is why he has a plan to put out the fire and build something better from the ashes.
TRANSCRIPT HIGHLIGHTS:
Jon Favreau: What made you finally decide to jump into politics, electoral politics, and decide to run for office?
Bob Brooks: […] I got tired of waking up in the morning feeling like I was getting kicked in the teeth by people that just don’t care about working-class people. So, that’s why I started thinking about this and talking to friends such as Governor Shapiro, Congressman Chris Deluzio, you know, just testing the waters […] I have multiple things to worry about. My mother is in her 70s, so she’s relying on Social Security right now and [Republicans are] talking about cutting that. My children are in their 30s, late 20s and 30s, and I worry about them as young people. And then I have granddaughters that are two and four years old, and I’m scared to death for what this country looks like for them. So if I’m not willing to fight, who’s going to?

Jon Favreau: You have a great ad you’ve been running. I just want to play it for everyone and then maybe we can react to it. Speaking of being a firefighter, let’s take a look. [Ad plays] I love that last line, “building something better from the ashes.” What does that mean to you? Where did that come from?
Bob Brooks: So, my house burned down when I was a senior in high school, and we had to rebuild everything from the ashes. So, I just think people aren’t looking for us to go back to the way things were 10 years ago, 20 years ago. They want something better. They want something that works for them. So if we take into account what’s happened in my history, in my life, we built back better from the ashes, and now we’re going to build back better from the ashes in Washington. The place is burned to the ground. Like, it’s bad, you know, and we need to come up with something better that represents and that works for working people…
[…]
Jon Favreau: Now, you probably talk to working people all the time who are struggling but also maybe don’t trust Democrats or haven’t trusted Democrats in the past to help. What’s a conversation you’ve had with a Trump voter that shows sort of what it would take to earn people’s trust back?
Bob Brooks: Well, they’ve got to deliver. We have to deliver a product. We can’t keep going down there with a message and saying, “Oh, we’re going to do this or we’re going to do that.” We have to deliver something for them for a change, and we have to actually put something in their hands, make their lives better. And that’s what we’re talking to them about. I’m not yelling at people, “Oh, you voted for Trump, you were wrong.” It’s not that way. I have open arms. Please come back. Give me an opportunity to represent you because the man in the office right now is just not doing it. Ryan McKenzie doesn’t care about you. He never has. I mean, the guy’s never had a job. He’s gone from Harvard to the state house to Congress. And you know, it’s going to be fun to give him his first application he has to fill out. But that’s what I’m saying to people is we’re just talking to them. We’re going to provide you with a product, something that makes your life better. Because if you ask them, “Is your life better now than it was a year and a half ago?” The answer is definitely no.
