🚨 RATINGS CHANGE: Cook Political Report Shifts MI-04 Race in Democrats’ Direction to “Lean Republican”

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report shifted Michigan’s 4th District in Democrats’ direction to “Lean Republican” – the latest sign that Bill Huizenga is staring down his toughest election yet.

Cook highlights Huizenga’s seat is looking “increasingly competitive” as “Republicans admit that they’re preparing for a close race.”

In part, Cook writes:

  • … Trump only carried the district by six points. As the historically conservative region around Grand Rapids has shifted left — Ottawa County was one of the few Michigan counties where Kamala Harris improved on Joe Biden’s margin — this district has become increasingly competitive for Democrats.
  • Kalamazoo area state Sen. Sean McCann, the likely Democratic nominee, released internal polling that showed him up three points over the congressman, and Republicans admit that they’re preparing for a close race.
  • McCann outraised Huizenga in the first quarter of 2026, a warning sign for the incumbent…
  • …Huizenga’s votes on healthcare — he voted against extending the Affordable Care Act tax credits, and like, the vast majority of Republicans, voted to cut Medicaid in the One Big Beautiful Bill — will be a central part of Democrats’ message.

DCCC Spokesperson Katie Smith:
“Bill Huizenga’s years in Washington cutting his own taxes, tripling his wealth, taking lavish vacations to Disney World and Scotland, and sticking Michigan families with the bill are coming back to bite him. Alarm bells are ringing for Huizenga because Michiganders are sick and tired of representatives in it for themselves: that’s why they’ll elect Sean McCann, a proven leader who stands up to the powerful to get things done for the people.”
