| Nonpartisan race rater Cook Political Reporter shifted its prediction for Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional District to “Lean Republican” towards Democrats — the latest sign that Wisconsinites are ready for change.
Cook writes in part that WI-01 “looks increasingly like a competitive race,” noting that “Democrats’ nominee, registered nurse Mitchell Berman, has released polling that shows him down one point to Steil, 49%-48%.”
REMINDER: Earlier this year, Supreme Court Justice Chris Taylor carried Wisconsin’s First District by 15 points and won four out of the five counties in the district.

The Guardian: Working-class ER nurse seeks to flip battleground Wisconsin House seat
- Democrats are targeting vulnerable seats this midterm election with working-class candidates they hope will resonate with voters exhausted by the economy… “Being a nurse working in the emergency room, we don’t have the luxury of standing around and not delivering for our patients. We have to make sure that we are addressing concerns in the immediate, making sure that when our patients come in, they leave the emergency department in better condition than they arrive,” Berman said. “That is not happening for folks here in our district.”
- “Coming from a working-class background, understanding what folks are going through [and] having walked a mile in my neighbor’s shoes gives me the ability to look at legislation from the perspective of having some empathy and understanding for what people are dealing with,” Berman said.
- “Right now people in the district feel betrayed by Bryan Steil because he had made promises to bring costs down, but things have only gotten worse here for people, and I think that’s because of policy positions he’s championed, allowed and abdicated to Donald Trump,” Berman said. “People are starting to recognize that a lot of the woes that they are feeling, when it comes to looking at their bank account at the end of the month, are because of poor decisions made by my opponent.”
ABC News: Democratic doctors, nurses aim to flip Congress seats with a focus on healthcare
- As an emergency room nurse in Wisconsin, Mitchell Berman says he sees patients who can’t afford their medications or utilities.
- “I can help mend their broken arm or give them medication to take away their pain, but what I struggle with is knowing full well that I can’t help them with the trauma that sets in two weeks later when they get their bill in the mail,” Berman said.
- Berman, whose race was recently added to Democrats’ targeted districts, is among a crop of Democratic medical professionals running for Congress who are campaigning to reduce healthcare costs.
- “Medicaid afforded my mom an additional eight years of life,” Berman told ABC News as he called out Steil’s vote for the bill. “It gave her the opportunity to dance with me at my wedding. It gave her the ability to hold my first daughter and her first grandchild.”
