3 Questions Congressman Schweikert Needs to Answer

Congressman David Schweikert is still struggling to contain the fallout from a damaging report released by the House Ethics Committee yesterday, raising even more questions about his future. The bipartisan Ethics Committee reported that there is “substantial reason” to believe that Schweikert violated ethics rules through his handling of taxpayer dollars and improper campaign contributions.

Here are three big questions Congressman Schweikert needs to answer as his legal problems escalate:

  • Congressman Schweikert finished last quarter with more than $200,000 outstanding legal bills. With no end to the ethics investigation in sight, how will Schweikert raise the money necessary to mount a competitive re-election bid?
  • Schweikert has repeatedly dismissed the subject of this investigation to Arizona voters, arguing that it is a “bookkeeping error.” Does Schweikert stand by that claim?
  • Before arriving in Congress, Schweikert wrote that “it takes real Arizona values and a zero-tolerance policy to [curtail lobbyist sway and special-interest influence]. No gifts, no trips, no nothing. Not even a cup of coffee.” Does he believe that same zero tolerance policy should apply to him?

“Congressman Schweikert’s ethics problems aren’t going anywhere – they’re getting worse. At some point Schweikert is going to have face his constituents and explain why they should re-elect him to the office he has been exploiting for his own gain,” said DCCC Spokesperson Brooke Goren.
