3 Questions Leading into Tomorrow’s GOP Primary in TX-15

The first midterm primary in the nation will be held tomorrow in Texas, and one to watch is the heated GOP contest in Texas’s 15th Congressional District between embattled candidate Monica De La Cruz and conspiracy theorist Mauro Garza. Here are three questions that will be answered tomorrow:

  • Will the allegations of abusive behavior against Monica De La Cruz prevent her from winning her primary outright? De La Cruz enters the primary facing allegations that she committed “verbal and physical abuse” against her teenage stepdaughter. Will the alarming accusations drag down the NRCC’s “rising star” and keep her from winning her primary outright?

  • In the battle between the GOP establishment and the far right, who will prevail? Monica De La Cruz has been described by her primary opponents as the “establishment” pick running against Mauro Garza, who went up with TV ads attacking De La Cruz and promoting the debunked lie that “FBI agents instigated or participated” in the January 6th attack. Kevin McCarthy-aligned Congressional Leadership Fund PAC swooped in to her rescue in the eleventh hour, going up with a radio ad attacking Mauro Garza on Monica De La Cruz’s behalf. Who will win?

  • Will the Republican candidates cast doubt on the election results if they lose? Monica De La Cruz is one of at least twelve “prized recruits” from the NRCC that has embraced Donald Trump’s Big Lie and “sought to undermine the legitimacy of the past elections.” De La Cruz has repeatedly publicly questioned the 2020 election results in Texas, falsely claiming that voter fraud “cost her the race” in 2020. Will the Republican candidates again question the legitimacy of the election if they lose?

“Between a candidate who is facing allegations of abusive behavior and a guy who will lie and cheat to get elected, the Republican Party has offered only losing options for South Texans in tomorrow’s election,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson.
