In between paying lawyers to handle his House Ethics investigation and mounting debt, Congressman David Schweikert has pandered to President Trump’s COVID-19 response, tacitly supporting unpopular policy after policy that goes directly against the needs of Arizonans.
With Trump in Phoenix to tout the COVID-19 response with Schweikert by his side, here are some things to keep in mind about the embattled congressman’s record of standing with Trump at the expense of his constituents:
- Despite governors, hospitals, Republican state lawmakers and the majority of Americans supporting reopening the federal insurance marketplace, a decision which stands to help the 743,500 uninsured Arizonans, Schweikert has refused to stand up to Trump and join them, making it harder for Arizonans without health care during a global pandemic.
- When President Trump suggested folks consume bleach to widespread outrage and condemnation, David Schweikert was silent and refused to speak out against this dangerous suggestion.
- There are 473,802 folks newly unemployed in Arizona, but even so the Trump Administration announced “kind of a pause period” on further economic relief as they “see how it’s doing,” and Schweikert still hasn’t spoken out against it.
- Trump’s Small Businesses Administration is failing small businesses. Between website glitches and technical issues that prevent small businesses from even submitting for loans while large companies like the pharmaceutical companies and Ruth’s Chris receive money, Arizona small businesses deserve more than the silence they get from Schweikert.
- David Schweikert continues to support the lawsuit to repeal the Affordable Care Act alongside Trump, even now. Yet this comes as no real surprise given Schweikert’s record of voting alongside Trump to threaten the health care of 9 million Arizonans who rely on Medicaid.
As the President visits the state and David Schweikert stands proudly beside him, Arizonans deserve answers for his silence and capitulation during this time of need.
