5 Things Steve Chabot Doesn’t Want to Talk About in Tonight’s OH-01 Debate

Congressman Steve Chabot is going to spend a lot of time on the debate stage tonight avoiding the issues he knows hurt his re-election chances. Unfortunately for him, we have the receipts.

In his quarter-century in office, Shady Chabot has become everything that’s wrong with Washington – using his position to engage in corrupt dealings that enrich himself and his family, while leaving his constituents behind. From his campaign’s FBI investigation, to his son-in-law’s website, to his votes to gut protections for people with pre-existing conditions, Chabot’s record in Washington is one where Ohioans come last.

Here’s what Steve Chabot doesn’t want you to know:

  1. The FBI Investigated Shady Chabot’s Campaign: It’s been over a year since Ohioans first learned that $123,000 was missing from Steve Chabot’s campaign coffers, money that remains unaccounted for. But just weeks ago, Chabot dropped another bombshell on his constituents when he revealed that the FBI got involved, looking into his campaign’s shady operations. Chabot can try and separate himself from this scandal, hemming and hawing about being a victim, but we all remember the standard Chabot laid down in 2018: “We’re dealing with a sleazy group of people and it starts at the top of the ticket.”
  2. Shady Chabot Still Refuses to Answer Important Questions About His Campaign’s Corruption: It’s been 13 months since Chabot’s corrupt campaign was thrust into the spotlight, and yet Ohioans still have more questions than answers. Where is the missing $123,000? Why didn’t Chabot’s Treasurer know he had the job? How can Chabot possibly be so out of touch that he didn’t know what was going on in his own campaign? What other communications have Chabot and his campaign had with the FBI?
  3. Shady Chabot Shelled Out Over $150,000 to His Son-in-Law: Steve Chabot has used his position to enrich his family, paying his son-in-law more than $150,000 to update his “outdated” and “clunky” website. His payments to his son-in-law were 800% above the going rate, represents 100% of Chabot’s son-in-law’s federal business since 2012. These payments were so egregious it led good government advocates to say the arrangement “smacks of nepotism and self-dealing.
  4. Chabot Voted 15 Times to Gut Protections for Pre-Existing Conditions: While Chabot has used his position to help his son-in-law, in Congress he’s left his constituents behind. Chabot voted 15 times to fully repeal the Affordable Care Act, votes that stand to increase health care costs, gut protections for pre-existing conditions, and institute an Age Tax for his constituents. Even as we struggle through a global pandemic, Chabot has continued to pursue this dangerous agenda.
  5. Chabot Voted Against Reforming the Police: In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, protests and bipartisan calls for change swept across the country. In Cincinnati, which knows this issue all too well, people pushed for real reform. Yet Steve Chabot said no. He voted against legislation to ban chokeholds, invest in additional police training, and to provide resources for mental health informed responses to 911-calls where appropriate.
