Today marks the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, guaranteeing a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. Ever since then, MAGA extremist Brandon Williams and House Republicans have attempted to roll back these rights, clinging to their dangerous, delusional belief that their attacks on women’s reproductive freedoms are popular.
In the 118th Congress alone, Williams’ majority has passed four anti-abortion bills:
H.R. 26 – Legislation targeting doctors who perform abortions
H.R. 6914 – Targeting college students’ right to essential health care
H.R. 6918 – Allowing federal funds to target women who seek essential health care and spread misinformation
And introduced six additional anti-abortion bills, including two total national abortion bans:
H.R. 7 – Blocks funding for reproductive health care force millions of women off their private health care plans
H.R. 4368 – Attempted to pass a new nationwide restriction on the safe, legal abortion medication mifepristone
H.R. 4664 – Strips away abortion services from hundreds of thousands workers and would allow employers in DC to discriminate against women who seek reproductive care
H.R. 5894 – Defunds critical health care resources for women, targets doctors by restricting access to essential training, and allows providers to discriminate against patients based on their personal beliefs
In Central New York on the campaign trail in 2022, Brandon Williams told his local paper on abortion: “The federal government needs to stay out of this. The states have to resolve this.” But, as the above votes prove in Congress, Williams has repeatedly voted alongside his MAGA party bosses to backtrack on his campaign promise to protect abortion nationally.
These are the facts: Williams cosponsored H.R. 7 – a fervently anti-abortion bill that would rip private health insurance coverage away from women and prevent the VA from providing reproductive health care to veterans. Even worse, H.R. 7 would overturn state law in New York state-law guaranteeing access to reproductive health care in private health insurance plans – taking away private health insurance for millions of New Yorkers.
New polling recently found that abortion rights have historic levels of support with voters, including 66% of voters who oppose ongoing Republican efforts to pass a national abortion ban.
REMINDER: The Chair of the NRCC encouraged his vulnerable members – like Brandon Williams – to brag about their extreme anti-abortion positions on the campaign trail: “Republicans don’t have a policy problem. We have a branding problem.”
DCCC Spokesperson Ellie Dougherty:
“Instead of working to lower costs or addressing a single pressing issue for families in Central New York, Brandon Williams voted to restrict women’s reproductive freedoms. He can’t hide the fact that he continues to support deeply unpopular attacks on Central New Yorkers’ rights, and Williams will pay for his vote at the ballot box.”
