51 Years After Landmark Roe v. Wade Decision, House Republicans Relentlessly Pursue National Abortion Ban – and Show No Signs of Stopping

Today marks the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, guaranteeing a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. Ever since then, House Republicans have attempted to roll back these rights, clinging to their dangerous, delusional belief that their attacks on women’s reproductive freedoms are popular.

In the 118th Congress alone, House Republicans have passed four anti-abortion bills:

  • H.R. 26 – Legislation targeting doctors who perform abortions

  • H.R. 6914 – Targeting college students’ right to essential health care

  • H.R. 6918 – Allowing federal funds to target women who seek essential health care and spread misinformation

  • H.R. 2670 – Tried to block reproductive health care access for members of the armed services

And introduced six additional anti-abortion bills, including two total national abortion bans:

  • H.R. 7 – Blocks funding for reproductive health care force millions of women off their private health care plans

  • H.R. 431 – Would ban abortion nationwide

  • H.R. 464 – Would ban abortion nationwide

  • H.R. 4368 – Attempted to pass a new nationwide restriction on the safe, legal abortion medication mifepristone

  • H.R. 4664 – Strips away abortion services from hundreds of thousands workers and would allow employers in DC to discriminate against women who seek reproductive care

  • H.R. 5894 – Defunds critical health care resources for women, targets doctors by restricting access to essential training, and allows providers to discriminate against patients based on their personal beliefs

New polling recently found that abortion rights have historic levels of support with voters, including 66% of voters who oppose ongoing Republican efforts to pass a national abortion ban.

REMINDER: The Chair of the NRCC encouraged his vulnerable members to brag about their extreme anti-abortion positions on the campaign trail: “Republicans don’t have a policy problem. We have a branding problem.”

DCCC Chair Suzan DelBene:
“Despite the relentless attacks by far-right extremists to restrict women’s reproductive rights, today is a day to highlight what is at stake in 2024 and that the public overwhelmingly agrees that the right to choose is fundamental and that medical decisions should be between a woman and her doctor. Voters continue to make it clear that they want a government that uplifts and uphold their rights, not one hellbent on taking those rights away.

“It’s incredibly important that House Democrats retake the majority – for women, for families, and for our constitutional freedoms. House Democrats are fighting everyday to protect our rights and are committed to passing legislation that would enshrine the protections of Roe into federal law – and guarantee access to reproductive care for everyone in every state.”
