51 Years After Landmark Roe v. Wade Decision, John James and House Republicans Relentlessly Pursue National Abortion Ban

Today marks the 51st anniversary of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, guaranteeing a woman’s right to reproductive freedom. Ever since then, John James and House Republicans have attempted to roll back these rights, clinging to their dangerous, delusional belief that their attacks on women’s reproductive freedoms are popular.

In the 118th Congress alone, James’ majority has passed four anti-abortion bills:

  • H.R. 26 – Legislation targeting doctors who perform abortions

  • H.R. 6914 – Targeting college students’ right to essential health care

  • H.R. 6918 – Allowing federal funds to target women who seek essential health care and spread misinformation

  • H.R. 2670 – Tried to block reproductive health care access for members of the armed services

James has said that he is “100% Pro-Life. Always have been. Always will be” and even compared abortion to “genocide.” He supported overturning Roe v. Wade, and promised to “not stop fighting until we end abortion.” James even went so far as to oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

After Michigan voters enshrined abortion rights in the state’s constitution, James has claimed “[n]ow that people in Michigan have made their decision, it is my job as the representative to represent my district.” However, he already reneged on that promise by voting to restrict the safe, legal abortion medication mifepristone.

New polling recently found that abortion rights have historic levels of support with voters, including 66% of voters who oppose ongoing Republican efforts to pass a national abortion ban.

REMINDER: The Chair of the NRCC encouraged his vulnerable members – like James – to brag about their extreme anti-abortion positions on the campaign trail: “Republicans don’t have a policy problem. We have a branding problem.”

DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
“Instead of working to lower costs or addressing a single pressing issue for families in Michigan, James voted to restrict women’s reproductive freedoms. He can’t hide the fact that he continues to support deeply unpopular attacks on Michiganders’ rights, and James will pay for his vote at the ballot box.”
