Top Republican Senator ‘Disappointed’ By House Republican-Backed Lawsuit To Eliminate ACA During COVID-19 Pandemic

Sen. Alexander’s Second Thoughts Follow AG Barr’s Failed Effort To Stop Lawsuit To Eliminate The Entire ACA

Less than one week after Attorney General Barr warned the White House not to take health care away from 20 million people and let insurance companies discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic – a top Republican is also having second thoughts about the House Republican-backed lawsuit.

Republican Senator Lamar Alexander said Sunday on Meet The Press that he was “disappointed” in the Administration’s decision to move forward with the lawsuit.

Alexander and House Republicans voted for the tax law that weakened the ACA and made the lawsuit possible.

House Republicans also VOTED TWICE – to back the lawsuit that Barr thinks will be political suicide for Republicans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last week, President Trump doubled down on the lawsuit – calling to “terminate health care” during an Oval Office appearance.

Meet The Press

Chuck Todd: Are you disappointed that the President decided to go ahead with the Obamacare
lawsuit. There was a window where he could have pulled – the Justice Department could have pulled out of
it. They didn’t. He wanted to continue forward. If you undo Obamacare, what’s the plan to replace it?

Sen Alexander: The answer to your question is yes. I thought the Justice Department argument was really
flimsy.

Statement From DCCC Spokesperson Robyn Patterson

“If House Republicans get their way, 20 million people will lose their health coverage and insurance companies will be able to turn away COVID-19 patients in the midst of a deadly pandemic. They own their decision to try and dismantle our health system during COVID-19 and it’s going to cost them their jobs in November.”
