A “Messy” And “Tempestuous Clash”: Brian Fitzpatrick Gets A Competitive Primary Opponent

The reviews are in, and things are not looking good for Republican Brian Fitzpatrick in Pennsylvania’s 1st Congressional District.

Last week, far-right personality and anti-abortion activist Mark Houck filed his statement of candidacy to challenge Fitzpatrick — setting the stage for a “messy” and “tempestuous” GOP primary “with a focus on abortion rights.”

Despite being a first-time candidate, Houck has a track record as a prolific fundraiser. His announcement has clearly spooked the NRCC and Washington insiders who are already vowing to “spend on the incumbent’s behalf, including in a primary race” if they have to.

While we’re only in the first round of this fight between anti-abortion extremists, Houck has come out of his corner swinging, claiming he “probably has greater name recognition than the incumbent.”

DCCC Spokesperson Aidan Johnson:
“Houck’s announcement is a lose-lose situation for Brian Fitzpatrick who will have to put his anti-abortion agenda center stage to win the Republican primary. Both of these candidates have been waging a war on women’s reproductive freedoms and will be held accountable for their extremism during this expensive race to the far-right.”
