| “Can’t politicians just be truthful?”
That’s what a frustrated constituent is asking after Rep. Ann Wagner sent an email newsletter spreading baseless claims about the government shutdown – a crisis she and her House GOP colleagues created by refusing to come to the negotiating table and bring down health care costs.
In a new letter, the Missouri voter puts Wagner on blast for falsely inflating the cost of extending the ACA tax credits – which thousands of Wagner’s constituents rely on for essential care – calling it “a new low,” even for her.
Let’s be clear: Wagner is lying because she knows she can’t defend her vote to gut health care to pay for massive tax breaks to billionaires.
Read the letter below:
St. Louis Post-Dispatch: Letter: Wagner’s lies about the shutdown show contempt for constituents
- We expect politicians to lie, but Rep. Ann Wagner has hit a new low. In an email sent to her constituents, she wanted us to let her know our opinion about whether the government shutdown should be ended. Fair question.
- However, her preface to this was a claim that the Democrats had shut down the government so that illegal aliens could get free medical care and to extend subsidies to the Affordable Care Act to the tune of $1.5 trillion.
- Illegal aliens to get free medical care is not the issue; this is already illegal and Democrats aren’t proposing it. And the cost of extending ACA subsidies is estimated to be $325 billion over a decade (according to the Congressional Budget Office), not $1.5 trillion.
- Even if I wanted to answer in the affirmative to Wagner’s letter and say the Democrats should not be shutting down the government, I cannot respond accordingly as her premise is incorrect.
- Can’t politicians just be truthful and state the facts and trust the people they represent to be well informed and respond to honestly stated facts? I guess not.
