A Second Local Editorial Board Blasts Scott Perry For Disparaging Veterans and Servicemembers

The York Dispatch Editorial Board becomes latest outlet to criticize Perry after he said that Democratic veterans only serve to “get the credential

Congressman Scott Perry continues to face blowback after he insulted Democratic servicemembers and veterans.

After the PennLive Editorial Board wrote that “Perry should be ashamed” of his remarks, the York Dispatch Editorial Board is out with another blistering takedown of the congressman for his offensive remarks.

York Dispatch writes in part: “The Scott Perrys of the political world would benefit their constituents — and themselves — by putting forward some worthwhile ideas, rather than worthless, witless claims about their opponents.”

Read more of their takedown here:

  • “No, Scott Perry, Democrats don’t ‘hate the military.’
  • “Dishonest” would be a charitable characterization of Perry’s comments on a nationally syndicated radio program last month. He told the host, Chris Stigall, that Democrats only serve in the military to enhance their resumes when they run for political office.
  • “They join the military, they serve a little bit, they get the credential and then they run for office and wear the uniform and say, ‘Look at me — I support America,’” said Perry, former chair of the House’s ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus. Elsewhere in the interview, he added, “they don’t care about the Constitution or the nation’s defense.”
  • That’s a hoot coming from someone who was at the center of efforts to overturn a presidential election. Navy veteran Rep. Chris Deluzio, a Pittsburgh-area Democrat, made exactly that point on social media, saying he didn’t need any lectures “about my military service or love of country from anyone who was part of the plan to overthrow the 2020 election and rip our Constitution to shreds.”
  • Perry’s voice is part of a loud, snide chorus.
  • From Trump on down, the GOP has peddled a narrative that liberals and Democrats — anyone who isn’t 100 percent behind Trump’s agenda, actually — are not just political opponents but dangerous, anti-American, left-wing terrorists.
  • As this month’s elections demonstrated, it’s not working.
  • It’s telling that the party in charge of all branches of the federal government needs to resort to dishonest characterizations of its political opponents. Meanwhile, a record-breaking government shutdown leaves millions of Americans hungry, stranded at airports, and going without paychecks.
  • The Scott Perrys of the political world would benefit their constituents — and themselves — by putting forward some worthwhile ideas, rather than worthless, witless claims about their opponents.”
