Zeldin Consistently Prioritizes Standing Up for Trump, Not His Constituents
Absentee Lee’s still at it.
The district work period provides an opportunity for members of Congress to be accessible to their constituents for seven uninterrupted days. Instead of being present for his constituents, Absentee Lee was in DC defending Trump as part of the impeached President’s eight-member Congressional defense team. Zeldin was seen in and around Senate chambers daily defending Donald Trump to the press scrum all week.
His lack of presence in his district hasn’t stopped Zeldin from receiving local attention, though it isn’t quite the press coverage a vulnerable member would like to see before an election. In the fall, one local paper wrote a scathing editorial urging the Congressman to refocus his energy on his district. And just yesterday, another local editorial board called out Zeldin for following in Mitch McConnell’s footsteps and defending Trump unquestioningly. The Riverhead News-Review reported, “Going through months of the congressman’s press releases, it’s all but impossible to find any serious criticism of anything the president has done since he took the oath of office.”
It’s this same lack of focus on issues that impact constituents’ everyday lives and blind loyalty to Trump that sparked the DCCC to launch digital ads in NY-01 last week reminding voters that Zeldin will let Trump get away with almost anything, including making cuts to Medicare.
“It’s become increasingly clear that Rep. Zeldin’s primary focus is defending Trump, not serving the people of New York’s First Congressional District,” said DCCC Spokesperson Christine Bennett. “Suffolk County voters will remember his choice to do cable hits defending Trump from DC over showing up for Long Island families and they will reject him come November.”
