After Days of Dysfunction, 18 Biden-District House Republicans Vote to Hand Power to Far-Right Extremists

Vulnerable Republicans threw their entire support behind Kevin McCarthy, even after he conceded power to far-right extremists

After days of dysfunction, failing to elect a Speaker, and stalling the work of Congress, House Republicans finally elected Kevin McCarthy Speaker of the House early Saturday morning.

In order to secure the Speakership, MAGA McCarthy was forced to negotiate and hand over power to the most extreme MAGA Republicans in his caucus. Now, after voting for McCarthy at every opportunity, 18 of 2024’s most vulnerable Republicans are on the record endorsing the series of backroom deals and dangerous policy demands McCarthy and his negotiators caved to in exchange for support from some of the far-right McCarthy dissenters.

  • David Schweikert (AZ-01)
  • Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06)
  • John Duarte (CA-13)
  • David Valadao (CA-22)
  • Mike Garcia (CA-27)
  • Young Kim (CA-40)
  • Michelle Steel (CA-45)
  • Don Bacon (NE-02)
  • Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07)
  • Nick LaLota (NY-01)
  • George Santos (NY-03)
  • Anthony D’Esposito (NY-17)
  • Mike Lawler (NY-17)
  • Marc Molinaro (NY-19)
  • Brandon Williams (NY-22)
  • Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR-05)
  • Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01)
  • Jen Kiggans (VA-02)

While we don’t know all the concessions and agreements made, here are just a few of the demands that these vulnerable Reps. are agreeing to:

  • Any one person can call to remove the Speaker, forcing McCarthy to answer to any and all of his extreme MAGA Members

  • Cutting $75 billion in defense spending

  • Grant powerful positions, like seats on the Rules Committee, to extreme Freedom Caucus Members, giving them veto power over all legislation

  • Require must-pass economic legislation – like raising the debt ceiling to avoid US economic default – to be paired with spending cuts that could destroy Social Security, Medicare, or other essential government programs. Fail to meet this extreme demand and Republicans would force a debt default, sending the US economy into a disastrous spiral

  • More extreme political investigations, including into the January 6th Select Committee, and the FBI and DOJ as they investigate certain Republicans’ role in January 6th and Donald Trump’s mishandling of top secret documents

  • And likely more extreme measures like abortion bans, chaotic House rules, and holding essential federal funds hostage.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“Each and every one of these vulnerable Republicans willfully handed power over to some of the most extreme MAGA Republicans. These party rubber stamps were so desperate and eager to vote for Kevin McCarthy that they supported his nomination regardless of the backroom dealings and major policy concessions that will hurt their own constituents. Voters will not forget, and Republicans will pay the price at the ballot box.”
