After the January 6th Assault on Capitol, Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar Betrayed Democracy

Miami’s GOP Members of Congress claim to be defenders of democracy, but their record in Congress shows they won’t even stand up for it at home

On January 6, 2021, a violent far-right mob incited by former President Trump and House Republicans’ “Big Lie” stormed our Capitol in an attempt to overturn a free and fair American election. This violent insurrection resulted in the deaths of 5 people and 140 officers injured.

For weeks leading up to January 6th, House Republicans worked to sow doubt among GOP voters and refused to acknowledge the results of the 2020 Presidential Election.

Among those spreading disinformation was Maria Elvira Salazar, who went on Spanish-language radio after the election to promote false conspiracy theories.

Carlos Gimenez found an even worse way to undermine American democracy — mere hours after the deadly insurrection, Gimenez chose to meet the demands of the violent insurrectionists and voted to invalidate millions of legitimate votes in the 2020 election.

And when it came to uncovering the truth about the deadly insurrection, how it happened, and how we can ensure it never happens again, Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar both said no in the final vote to create an investigative committee.

Most recently, both Gimenez and Salazar joined House Republicans’ latest attempt to undermine the bipartisan Select Committee and protect Trump crony and key witness Steve Bannon, who has critical information about the events that directly led up to the January 6th insurrection.

DCCC Spokesperson Abel Iraola
“A year ago today, we witnessed one of the darkest days in American history and an unprecedented moment in our democracy. Carlos Gimenez and Maria Elvira Salazar have been given every chance to show they actually stand for the principles of democracy and freedom, but instead have chosen to embrace disinformation, lies, and refuse to investigate a violent insurrection that sought to stop a peaceful transfer of power in the United States of America. Their conduct in Congress calls into question every claim they make about their dedication to democracy abroad when they are otherwise prepared to throw it out the window here at home.”
