Ahead of Trump Rally, North Carolina Republicans Are in Disarray

Bo Hines’ and Madison Cawthorn’s appearance at Trump’s rally won’t save them from their primary troubles

Tomorrow, Donald Trump is headed to North Carolina for a rally, and will appear on stage with North Carolina Republicans Bo Hines and Madison Cawthorn. But the former president’s backing won’t be enough to save these two from their primary troubles.

Here are three questions to keep in mind during tomorrow’s Trump rally:

  • Will Bo Hines continue to get hammered by local Republicans in spite of his Trump endorsement? Local conservatives are “revolting” against Bo Hines, Trump’s pick in the crowded NC-13 Republican primary. It’s going to take more than Trump’s blessing to get Hines through the primary, which also includes longtime Trump ally Renee Ellmers.

  • Will Madison Cawthorn continue to embarrass the Republican caucus? Cawthorn has recently come under fire for calling Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a “thug” who ran an “incredibly evil” government. And just last week, the Republican caucus spiraled into chaos when Cawthorn claimed that Republican lawmakers had invited him to take part in orgies and even snorted lines of cocaine right in front of him. What embarrassing headlines will he earn for Republicans tomorrow?

  • Will Sandy Smith be in attendance? Republican Sandy Smith in NC-01 is a conspiracy theorist who marched on the Capitol as rioters stormed police barricades on January 6. Will the “unapologetic America first” candidate be in attendance today as she scrambles for voters in her tough primary?

“The Republican Party has nothing to offer North Carolina voters but embarrassing headlines and divisive extremism,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson.
