Amid COVID-19 Pandemic, Chase, Herrell Fail to Address Health Care in Forum

NM-02 Republican candidates offer no solutions on voters’ number one concern

On Friday night, the Republicans running for New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District faced off in one of their first forums in what has been one of the most “negative and nasty” primary battles across the country. Over the course of the forum, 2018 nominee Yvette Herrell and lobbyist Claire Chase spent more than an hour taking veiled shots at one another. Noticeably missing from the conversation? Voters’ number one concern – health care.

Meanwhile, as Chase and Herrell have spent the last few weeks distracted by personal attacks, Representative Xochitl Torres Small has been focused on helping southern New Mexicans access health care in the face of one of the worst public health crises in decades. Just last week, Rep. Torres Small and a bipartisan group of lawmakers successfully got Medicare to cover no-contact medical services during the coronavirus outbreak.

Now, with several more debates and forums coming up this week, here are three health care questions the Republicans running to represent NM-02 should be forced to answer:

  1. Do Herrell, Chase and Chris Mathys agree with President Trump’s refusal to back down on a lawsuit that would eliminate the entire Affordable Care Act?
  2. Do Herrell, Chase and Mathys agree with President Trump’s refusal to reopen the Affordable Care Act marketplace, which would have extended the opportunity for millions of recently jobless Americans to buy health insurance?
  3. Do Herrell, Chase and Mathys believe that Medicare should be empowered to negotiate lower drug prices for all Americans?
