As U.S Economy Grows, Republicans Call to Cut Social Security and Medicare

According to reports released today, the U.S. economy is growing – thanks to Democrats’ continued efforts to recover from the pandemic and 2020’s high unemployment, and tackle ongoing global economic challenges. While Democrats are working to fix the economy, House Republicans are planning to cut Social Security and Medicare. This is just one part of Republicans’ disastrous economic agenda.

Despite the fact that millions of seniors have paid into Social Security all their lives and now rely on their earned benefits, Republicans still plan to delay or sunset Social Security altogether if they gain control of Congress.

  • Sen. Rick Scott has pitched and garnered support for his plan that would raise taxes on millions of Americans and sunset essential programs like Social Security and Medicare within 5 years.

  • The Republican Study Committee – which represents nearly 75% of the House Republican Conference – has a plan that would raise the Social Security eligibility age, delaying when seniors can access their hard-earned benefits. Multiple Republican candidates have said they support this plan.

  • House Republicans are reportedly planning to vote against necessary debt ceiling increases to leverage their plans to cut Social Security and Medicare.

  • Kevin McCarthy, Jim Banks and numerous other House Republicans confirmed that the GOP is willing to tank the U.S. economy to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

  • Dozens of Republicans in swing districts have stated and reaffirmed they want to raise the eligibility age, examine caps, privatize, or chop Social Security.

DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia:
“We’ve been making the case that Republicans are a serious threat to Social Security and Medicare for months. The positive news about a growing U.S. economy makes the contrast between the two parties clear – while Democrats are unwavering in their fight to improve the lives of everyday people and address economic challenges, Republicans are planning to gut people’s earned benefits.”
