As the Treasury Department is forced to take “extraordinary measures,” House Republicans remain committed to their political games. Instead of protecting essential government programs and the full faith and credit of the United States, House Republicans are trying to leverage this routine, must-pass economic legislation to enact their MAGA agenda and force cuts to things like Social Security and Medicare.
This shouldn’t be a partisan political issue. Congress has addressed the debt 80 times – including three times under the Trump Administration, when Republicans and Democrats voted together.
House Republicans did not care about the national debt when they helped Donald Trump add $8 trillion to the tab with unpaid-for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and giant corporations. But now that government funding is going towards rebuilding crumbling infrastructure, lowering healthcare costs for seniors and veterans, and boosting American manufacturing, Republicans are again refusing to pay the bills and are willing to tank the U.S. economy.
DCCC spokesperson Tommy Garcia
“Every single House Republican who stands by Kevin McCarthy and MAGA extremists as they toy with the full faith and credit of the United States, is responsible for any economic hardship to come.”
