As Republicans finish debating how many Americans they plan to kick off Medicaid and how many children they believe should go hungry, Don Bacon officially throws his support behind Republicans’ plan to slash Medicaid and SNAP to pay for their tax cuts for billionaires.
More than 120,000 people, including nearly 60,000 children, in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District rely on Medicaid coverage as Republicans cut nearly $900 billion from the program. More than 40,000 of Don Bacon’s constituents will have their health care threatened by his lack of a backbone and more than half of nursing homes in his district will be at risk of closure.
The Republican bill would also cut nearly $300 billion from SNAP which is relied on by over 23,000 households in Bacon’s district, over 50% of which have children.
Bacon’s vote threatens the livelihoods of Nebraskan farmers and ranchers. As one of the largest agricultural producers in the country, Nebraska’s farmers would bear the brunt of the nationally estimated $30 billion in lost revenue as SNAP participants pare back their food spending.
Bacon previously stated that he opposed cuts to SNAP and he now stands prepared to provide a critical vote for extremist House Republicans as they seek to pass their enormous tax breaks for the wealthy on the backs of everyday Nebraskans.
DCCC Spokesperson Madison Andrus:
“The moment we all knew was coming is finally here – Don Bacon is ready to admit that he will once again bend the knee to extremist Republican leadership in Washington and leave Nebraskans out to dry. Don Bacon’s fake hand-wringing and ‘deep concern’ wasn’t fooling anyone, we’ve seen this same tired play again and again. Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District deserves representation that will actually fight for them, not Don Bacon’s insincere act.”
