Don Bacon’s political games are in the spotlight as he tries to take both sides on his party’s chaotic Speaker vote.
Last week, he thought Jim Jordan would make “a great speaker” – but this week, he’s suddenly voting against Jordan.
While Bacon plays politics in DC, nothing is getting done for Nebraskans. The Farm Bill is going on day 19 of being expired, putting the 6,300 dairy jobs in the district at risk of missing critical monthly payments. And as the government once again barrels toward a shutdown in less than a month, veterans could lose critical services and active duty military could be forced to work without pay.
Hard, hard right Congressman Jim Jordan came up 17 votes short of the Speaker’s job today as 20 Republicans including Omaha area Representative Don Bacon voted against Jordan. But Bacon’s critics argue he’s trying to have it both ways, talking Jordan down on one camera, while praising him on another.
Today he was asked if his vote could change.
CNN: “Are you a hard no?”
Rep. Don Bacon: “No, I never use the terms hard no or never, but I am opposed. I can’t abide by the fact a small group violated the rules to get what they wanted, so now I’m supposed to play by the rules. So, I think we got to have consequences and we have to stand up to this. That’s what Americans do.”
But this was Bacon a week ago:
“Jim Jordan has done a great job this past week and the last couple of years as a chairman. He’s convinced me that he can also represent the entire Congress, or all the Republicans. I think he’d do a great job as a Speaker as well.”
