Congressman Don Bacon has tried to portray himself as supportive of DREAMers, but now, as his fellow Republicans take real action to help them, Bacon has destroyed his credibility with his inaction and duplicity. And like a typical politician Bacon is throwing DREAMers under the bus to keep Paul Ryan happy, and keep the campaign dough rolling in.
Twenty Republicans have signed onto a discharge petition to force a vote on DACA legislation. A discharge petition is a legislative procedure that requires 218 signatures from members of Congress to force a bill out of committee and onto the floor for a vote. Given the twenty Republicans that have already signed it, and the strong likelihood that all 193 Democrats would add their signatures, the discharge petition needs a mere five Republicans for success.
Yet Don Bacon has refused to sign the discharge petition in order to keep Paul Ryan and his campaign donors “happy,” destroying any shred of credibility he had on DACA and DREAMers.
“For months, Bacon has said he supports DREAMers, but now that he actually has the chance to help them, he’s sitting on the sidelines in order not to upset his campaign donors,” said DCCC Spokesman Evan Lukaske. “Bacon has destroyed his credibility on this issue and revealed that he’s just another typical politician.”
