Bad News Baugh in Cleanup Mode After Claiming “War on Wokism” More Threatening to America Than 9/11 Terrorist Attacks, Both World Wars, and Civil War

Baugh’s campaign doubled down on comments just days away from 9/11 anniversary

This week, the Huffington Post broke news that Scott Baugh, Republicans’ top choice for California’s 47th Congressional District, said that “wokism” is more threatening to the country than the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, both world wars and the Civil War.

Instead of apologizing, Baugh’s campaign doubled down on his horrific comments and said nothing of the loss of life during the 9/11 terrorist attacks with the anniversary just days away, and Californians are reading all about it:

California Republican says ‘wokism’ is worse than Civil War, both World Wars and 9/11
Sacramento Bee | Andrew Sheeler | September 6, 2023

  • Nearly 3,000 people died on 9/11. More than 600,000 perished in the Civil War. At least 75 million soldiers and civilians were killed in the two World Wars. But one Southern California Republican, [Scott Baugh], has called “wokism” a greater threat than any of those wars or terrorist attacks.

  • “What’s the greatest threat to religious freedom? We were born in the Revolutionary War, we survived the Civil War, World War II, World War I, a lot of wars. 9/11. None of those were that threatening to our country compared to the war that we’re fighting now. That war is about ‘wokism’ and the lack of common sense,” Baugh said.

  • Reached for comment, Baugh told The Bee that the context in which he said those remarks, which he said may have been “inartful,” was that the U.S. had just come out of a pandemic in which churches and schools were closed.

Democrats Criticize GOP Candidate in California Who Said ‘Wokeism’ is Greater Threat Than World War II
The Messenger | Sophie Tatum | September 5, 2023

  • The campaign arm of the House Democrats is going after California Republican congressional hopeful Scott Baugh for comments he made saying  “wokeism” poses a greater threat than the one presented by World War II.

  • In a speech Baugh made to the International Christian Ambassadors Association posted on YouTube in June, and first reported on by The Huffington Post, the former California Assembly Republican Leader says the “biggest threat to religious freedom” is “wokeism.”

  • “Scott Baugh’s disgusting culture war nonsense has gone too far,” said DCCC spokesperson Dan Gottlieb in a statement. “Service members and veterans deserve better than this offensive propagandist, and so does California’s 47th District.”

California Globe | Evan Symon | September 5, 2023

  • Attorney Scott Baugh, the lead GOP candidate running in the 47th Congressional race next year, responded to criticism on Tuesday over comments made earlier about the threats of “wokeism” to religious freedom.

  • The speech remained in obscurity until very recently, with the Huffington Post releasing a story on the speech early on Tuesday. Many soon denounced what Baugh said, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who also commented that “Baugh is a perennial loser who would fail again in 2024.”

  • “Scott Baugh’s disgusting culture war nonsense has gone too far,” said DCCC spokesman Dan Gottlieb in a statement. “Service members and veterans deserve better than this offensive propagandist, and so does California’s 47th District.”
