NRCC Chair Tom Emmer refused to rule out backing insurrectionist House candidates, but a federal appeals court just did. According to the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, the 14th Amendment, which bars insurrectionists from holding office, may also be applied to current and future political candidates – meaning those candidates who encouraged, organized and participated in the January 6th insurrection could be banned from holding office.
That’s bad news for these Republican candidates in swing districts:
-
NRCC Young Gun and WI-03 candidate Derrick Van Orden was caught lying about being in a restricted area of Capitol grounds after previously trying to cover up his attendance at the insurrection. He also bankrolled his trip using leftover campaign funds from his previous failed run, potentially violating federal election law.
-
NRCC-backed NV-04 candidate Annie Black was a proud participant in the “Stop the Steal Rally” on January 6th and has even called herself “insurrection Annie.”
-
NRCC-endorsed OH-09 nominee JR Majewski bragged about crossing police barricades during the insurrection and even raised “about $25,000” for dozens of other insurrectionists to attend.
-
NC-01 nominee Sandy Smith was at the “Stop the Steal Rally” and posted pictures marching on the Capitol grounds.
-
IA-03 candidate Gary Leffler was at the rally and has proudly discussed being at the insurrection.
-
NJ-03 candidate Ian Smith attended the protest outside the Capitol on January 6th.
We will remind voters that the Republican party coddles insurrectionists every day until election day. See more here.
DCCC spokesperson Chris Taylor:
“It’s a tough day for the NRCC when a federal court rules that insurrectionists, like their top recruits, may be prohibited from seeking office.”
