Barrett Allegedly Broke Campaign Finance Law to Pay Campaign Consultant

Barrett faces federal ethics complaint for apparent misuse of campaign funds

Yesterday, reports from MLive and The Detroit News revealed allegations that MI-07 Republican candidate Tom Barrett misused $40,000 in state campaign funds to bankroll his federal political aspirations.

End Citizens United filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission to report Barrett’s suspicious use of state campaign funds to pay a top campaign consultant. Barrett claimed to pay the consultant for “redistricting consulting,” but the redistricted maps were already approved by the public, and the consultant is now running his congressional campaign, raising questions about the true nature of the payments.

Barrett’s suspicious use of funding is raising questions about his honesty.

“Tom Barrett thinks he can pull the wool over Michigan voters’ eyes, but he has some explaining to do on his apparent shady dealings,” said DCCC spokesperson Matt Corridoni.
