Bath, Ohio Voter: “Luckily, there is someone there to fight for us, and that’s Emilia Sykes.” [Akron.com]

In a new letter to the editor, a resident of Bath, Ohio thanked Congresswoman Emilia Sykes for “fighting for every one of her constituents” and her “thoughtful approach toward resolution” of the Republican government shutdown.

John Bender praises Sykes for working to “find compromise” while fighting to prevent health care costs from skyrocketing, and for introducing the Pay Our Military Act and Feed Our Families Act to provide paychecks to servicemembers and food assistance to those who rely on it.

Akron.com: Bath resident praises Sykes’ efforts

  • We’re thankful for Congresswoman Emilia Sykes’ thoughtful approach toward resolution in avoidance of and communication during President [Donald] Trump’s government shutdown. Not only did she remain in Washington with other Democrats working to find compromise while Republicans took another taxpayer-paid vacation, but she has continued to communicate thoughtfully and consistently what Trump’s shutdown means for the working people of the 13th District.
  • Fighting for and reporting back to their constituency is exactly what we expect from our representation. An estimated 514,000 Ohio residents will see their health care premiums double under the Republican spending proposal. That’s almost the population of the cities of Akron and Cleveland combined!
  • Republicans have promised to negotiate Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies later in the year if a funding agreement is reached, but the working people of Ohio have seen too many empty promises. From day one of this term, they promised to “immediately bring down prices,” but grocery prices are up 3.2%.
  • They’ve promised to reduce government spending by cutting federal programs but sent $40 billion of our tax dollars to bail out Argentina, even as our deficit growth accelerates.
  • Congresswoman Sykes is fighting for every one of her constituents who show up for work every day and pay taxes but get nothing in return from the current Republican administration but broken promises.
  • Even as Speaker [Mike] Johnson has kept the house in recess to delay swearing in congresswoman-elect Adelita Grijalva, Sykes has remained with House Democrats willing to work toward reopening the government. Immediately after the shutdown started, she held a town hall open to all constituents to answer questions about the shutdown. She communicates updates every day on her website and through social media, and her office is responsive to questions and comments.
  • Most importantly, Congresswoman Sykes has introduced the Pay Our Military Act to ensure that our service members and support staff continue to be paid and the Feed Our Families Act to make sure that food assistance programs for those in need continue to be funded through the shutdown.
  • As Trump’s shutdown continues, we need to ask ourselves, are we better off than we were when he took office? Are our bills lower? Are groceries cheaper? Have we grown more united as a nation or are we increasingly divided by rhetoric? If the answer to any or all of these is “no,” remember the Republicans that control all three branches of government and their broken promises. Luckily, there is someone there to fight for us, and that’s Emilia Sykes.
