Beth Van Duyne Wants Texans Kicked Out of Their Homes

Van Duyne doubles down on opposing COVID-19 relief; sponsors bill to make it easier to evict her constituents

One of Beth Van Duyne’s (TX-24) first defining acts in Congress was her vote against the American Rescue Plan, which provided sorely-needed pandemic relief for struggling families, working parents, and businesses. But she’s not done hanging Texas families out to dry — this week, Beth introduced a bill that takes aim at protections for families at risk of being evicted from their homes.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought financial hardship on hundreds of thousands of working families across Texas, and Beth Van Duyne’s district is no exception. As of early July, an estimated 76,219 (16.4%) rental households were struggling to pay rent on time in Dallas County. And Dallas Morning News reported that “nearly a third of Texas tenants — compared with a quarter of those nationally — have little or no confidence in their ability to pay next month’s rent […] Of those Texans already behind on rent, nearly 40% say it’s very likely they’ll be evicted in the next two months.”

Instead of supporting Texas families trying to make ends meet during a devastating pandemic, Beth Van Duyne — who has taken $21,000 from real estate industry PACs — went to DC to make it easier for Texans to be kicked out of their homes.

“The real estate industry spent tens of thousands of dollars bankrolling Beth Van Duyne’s political ambitions, and now they’re cashing in,” said DCCC spokesperson Monica Robinson. “Working Texans deserve better than politicians like Beth Van Duyne, who would rather see her constituents kicked to the curb than vote for pandemic relief.”
