Today, respected non-partisan election forecasters at Sabato’s Crystal Ball downgraded Schweikert’s re-election chances. The shift in rating comes after Tuesday’s close special election in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District.
By the numbers, Arizona’s 6th Congressional District is significantly better for Democrats than the 8th was, with Trump winning by only 9.9% in the 6th versus 20.7% in the 8th.
In addition to the numbers, David Schweikert’s ethics scandals, disdain for the people of Arizona, and penchant for making inflammatory comments is likely to make this his toughest re-election yet. This week he continued to show how out of step he is with the people of Arizona by lashing out at grassroots Democratic enthusiasm, saying they are parasites and need to be crushed.
“The narrow results in Arizona’s 8th District spell serious trouble for Republicans like David Schweikert,” said DCCC Spokesperson Amanda Sherman. “From an ongoing ethics investigations to his support of a toxic Republican agenda and inflammatory comments Rep. Schweikert continues to show he is an ideologue who is out of step with the people of Arizona’s 6th Congressional District.”
