Kean Jr. cast a deciding vote as a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee to advance major cuts to Medicaid
Tom Kean Jr. voted today to advance massive cuts to Medicaid, a program that roughly 2 million people across the Garden State – including 73,000 people in NJ-07 – rely on for health care coverage, all to pay for trillions in tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy.
A member of the House Energy & Commerce Committee, Kean Jr. provided a crucial vote to advance Republicans’ plan to enact the largest cuts to Medicaid in history that would lead to millions of Americans losing health care, threaten the closure of hospitals across the country, and also levy a hidden tax on Medicaid enrollees. Overlook Medical Center, located in Kean Jr.s’ district, is projected to lose $3 million under Kean Jr. and House Republicans’ plan.
Kean Jr. reportedly “walked past dozens of people in wheelchairs, disability advocates protesting Medicaid cuts, who lined the halls outside the hearing room” and refused to say a word before walking inside the Committee room to cast his callous vote.
During committee debate, Kean Jr. voted down amendments to protect Medicaid and lower prescription drug prices.
DCCC spokesperson Eli Cousin:
“After lying to his constituents for months that he would not cut Medicaid, Tom Kean Jr. today cast a deciding vote to advance House Republicans’ scheme that would rip health insurance away from countless New Jersey families. Voters will hold him accountable in November for screwing over the very Garden State families he should be fighting for.”
