In CA-49’s congressional election, GOP candidate Brian Maryott has taken pains to paint himself as a moderate on abortion, rejecting the idea of a national abortion ban.
But months earlier, facing a more conservative electorate, Maryott sang a different tune. As reported by the Times of San Diego, Maryott signed a pledge crafted by a group dedicated to creating a ‘Biblical citizenship.” The pledge includes protecting “life from the moment of conception” and “defending natural marriage.”
The group’s mission statement leaves no room for doubt, insisting “the family can be redeemed by: marriage, which God created to be between one man and one woman only” and “abolishing abortion.”
Of course, Maryott’s 2022 pledge to abolish abortion is not the first time the MAGA Republican revealed his true anti-abortion extremism. Brian Maryott has always stood against women’s rights – in 2020, Maryott confirmed his opposition to abortion and refused to support exceptions to abortion bans even in circumstances of rape, incest or life of the mother.
