California Dreamin’: Republicans Desperate After Being Kicked to the Curb

After Californians overwhelmingly passed Proposition 50, California House Republicans are left to grapple with the sound rejection by not only California voters, but their D.C. party bosses, too.

New reporting from The Bulwark makes it clear that California Republicans will be getting the boot next fall after voters chose a new map that ensures some “reliably red areas…won’t be around much longer.”

Now, Young Kim is still trying to grovel for her party bosses’ approval. When asked if Donald Trump and Mike Johnson made a mistake by gerrymandering maps across the country, she ignored the fact that – unlike Republicans’ power grab in other states – California voters had the power to decide and they “approved it by a margin of over three million ballots.”

DCCC Spokesperson Anna Elsasser:
“While California Republicans are busy kissing up to their D.C. party bosses at their own peril, their constituents are holding them accountable for their corrupt, cost-raising agenda. Californians made their voices heard at the ballot box, and are ready to send Republicans packing again next year.”

The Bulwark: Trump Kicks California Republicans Into the Abyss

  • For decades, California Republicans have been essential to the GOP’s ability to gain a majority in the House. But the handful of competitive districts and reliably red areas far from the coast—the ones where these Republican candidates won their seats—won’t be around much longer.

  • […] This surely was a bitter pill for the House’s California Republicans, who appear to have lost their careers…Naturally, I sought them out, to ask: “Was it worth it?”
  • “However it started, I think the redistricting is wrong,” said Rep. Young Kim (R-Calif.), whose purple swing district is now merging with another to create a race that pits her against her longtime House GOP colleague, Rep. Ken Calvert. “In the case of California, we put the [independent] commission in place. So what happened in California last week is taking the will of the people away. They’re taking the representation away.”
  • It’s not as simple as what Kim said. Unlike Texas and other states that have moved to adopt new maps through their legislature, California actually put its map changes to a vote, and the state’s citizens approved it by a margin of over three million ballots. When I asked if it was a mistake for Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson to have egged on the redistricting battles—considering it will have netted their party few if any seats, it broke longstanding norms, and it sparked a voter backlash—she said: “Why would you put this on them?” […]
