Calvert Doubles Down on Gutting Medicaid for 40,000 CA-41ers: It’s “Not Too Much to Ask”

As a second vote on the Big, Ugly Bill approaches in the House, Ken Calvert is doubling down on his vote to gut health care for nearly 40,000 people and slash food assistance for over 30,000 households in his district.

When pressed to explain why he supported the bill and voted to rip away health care from his constituents, he said “Let’s not get caught up on issues…that’s not too much to ask.”

Ken Calvert thinks basic health care is too much to ask — but tax breaks for billionaires? Apparently not.

  • WHITE: “Ken Calvert…[is] defending his support for the package that includes hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts to Medicaid.”
  • WHITE: “Fight for your Health is slamming you for saying you lied about supporting Medicaid cuts.”
  • CALVERT: “Medicaid is fine, we’re not doing anything to Medicaid… that’s not too much to ask.”
  • WHITE: “But when it goes into effect… fewer people in your district would be covered.”
  • CALVERT: “Well, again if they work 20 hours a week and volunteer for 20 [hours a week].. It’s not too much to ask.”
  • WHITE: “Republicans have long said they’re the party of fiscal responsibility, and it is a lot of debt.”
  • CALVERT: “Obviously the debt is a big problem.”
  • CALVERT: “I think it’s a good bill…Let’s not get caught up on issues – one or two – you might not agree with.”
  • “It’s not a perfect bill, but we can’t let perfect be the enemy of the good.”
