Can the NY-19 Republicans Recover From Their Debilitating Primary?

Conservatives John Faso and Andrew Heaney Launch Personal Attacks, Expose Each Other’s Flaws and Vulnerabilities in District that Voted for President Obama Twice

The Republican primary in New York’s 19th congressional district is plummeting into a bruising contest that can be summed up in one word: debilitating.

The two candidates, Albany conservative politician John Faso and Trump-Fanboy Andrew Heaney, are deep in the mud as they hurl personal attacks and expose each other’s flaws and vulnerabilities ahead of the general election.

The question now is how Faso or Heaney will be able to recover from the damages in a district that voted for President Obama twice.

Here are some recent highlights of the debilitating primary:

Newsmax: “This is in large part because of what pundits are increasingly dubbing the nastiest Republican primary of all [June 28] between former State Assembly GOP Leader John Faso and wealthy businessman and political newcomer Andrew Heaney.”

Times-Union: “In NY-19 GOP primary, letters – and sparks – fly

Register-Star: “Congressional candidates John Faso and Andrew Heaney continued to trade barbs Monday as the chairman of the state Conservative Party sent a letter to Heaney telling him to “knock it off” with regards to attack ads against Faso.”

Daily Star: “The war of words in the GOP primary for New York’s 19th Congressional District has flared anew […]The Faso campaign, meanwhile, has issued a ‘cease and desist letter,’ calling on Heaney to stop running ads that show a “reckless disregard for the truth.”

“As the two Republican congressional candidates in New York’s 19th district, Albany conservative politician John Faso and Trump-Fanboy Andrew Heaney, continue to launch debilitating personal attacks and drag each other further to the right, they won’t be able to undo the damage in the eyes of Hudson Valley general election voters who voted for President Obama twice,” said Bryan Lesswing at the DCCC.
