CNN is reporting an internal Capitol Police memo warned there is potential for clashes and unrest during an upcoming rally on Capitol Hill. According to the Capitol Police memo, violent rhetoric online has increased just days ahead of the September 18th rally.
The anti-democracy, “Justice for J6″ Rally” is meant to defend individuals indicted for storming the U.S. Capitol and assaulting law enforcement during the January 6th Insurrection that killed five Americans and threatened the lives of Members of Congress and former Vice President Pence.
It’s no surprise what’s fueling the violent rhetoric: Just last week extremist House Republican Madison Cawthorn went unchecked by party leadership after he warned there could be “bloodshed”, because individuals who participated in the insurrection were “political hostages.” Now, law enforcement, Congressional staffers, and members of Congress could again be put in harm’s way.
Thanks to extremist Republicans’ party Chair Tom Emmer, there’s no end in sight for this kind of rhetoric. Emmer has refused to rule out supporting candidates that attended the deadly January 6th insurrection, like WI-03 Republican candidate Derrick Van Orden who used campaign funds to bankroll a trip to the insurrection and lied about entering a restricted area on Capitol grounds.
DCCC Spokesperson Chris Taylor
“Our Capitol Police Officers may again be forced to courageously risk their lives to defend our democracy against insurrectionists being amped up by violent, extremist rhetoric from the lies of House Republicans like Madison Cawthorn. The bar is on the floor for extremist ringleaders Kevin McCarthy and Tom Emmer but even they should be able to denounce an anti-democracy rally fueled by violent extremists.”
