The Case Against Brian Maryott

“While Congressman Mike Levin has been an independent voice working to serve his community in San Diego, Brian Maryott has eagerly parroted Washington Republicans’ talking points. From health care repeal to the Washington tax scam, Maryott has shown he would be a party line vote for Republicans’ out of touch agenda that would dismantle our current health care system, undermine protections for people living with pre-existing conditions, and raise taxes on middle class homeowners. On the defining issues, Maryott has shown how out of touch he is with the voters of Southern California and voters will re-elect Congressman Mike Levin in November,” said DCCC Chairwoman, Cheri Bustos.

Subject: The Case Against Brian Maryott

The race between Brian Maryott and Rep. Mike Levin is a contest between a community leader who has been a true advocate for working families and a former banking executive who is now a perennial candidate in California’s 49th District. In 2018, after spending $700,000 of his own funds Maryott turned in an 8th place finish to earn only 3 percent in the primary.

Beyond being a glutton for electoral punishment, Maryott has been happy to parrot Washington Republicans’ talking points on the most defining issues for Orange County voters. From health care to taxes, Maryott has run as a champion for the Washington Republican agenda of dismantling the ACA and raising taxes on California homeowners by supporting their Republican tax scam.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Levin has worked tirelessly to fight for the families of Southern California with a laser focused on results for the people of the 49th District. From constituent coffees and monthly town halls to a community taskforce to address nuclear waste on the most pristine surf beach in the district and state, Levin in his first 16 months in Congress, has shown that, unlike his Republican predecessor, he is exceedingly accessible, inclusive and accountable to the voters of Southern California.

In this suburban, deeply college-educated district that rejected Donald Trump by 7 points and elected Levin by 13 points, Mike is ready to win re-election against a Brian Maryott’s flawed retread candidacy.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

“In congress, Levin said he’s most proud of getting his first two bipartisan veterans bills signed into law by the president, to support veterans interested in STEM education, and to help veterans with their VA home loans.” [Orange County Register, 2/21/20]

“Members of a San Onofre Task Force convened by San Diego Congressman Mike Levin are meeting Wednesday with officials from Southern California Edison, which owns and operates the shuttered nuclear power plant in North San Diego County. The Task Force was created to increase public involvement in the decommissioning of the plant, which shut down in 2012 after a small radioactive leak was discovered in the steam generators.” [KPBS, 5/29/19]

“After his wife, daughter and sister-in-law died in a bluff collapse last summer, Encinitas resident Pat Davis joined the many local voices calling for federal funding to combat the erosion, sea level rise and other environmental factors that caused it. He and U.S. Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, marked the recent allocation of the first $400,000 from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during a Feb. 21 news conference at Grandview Beach in Encinitas, steps away from the fatal collapse. Levin announced Feb. 10 that the funds had been secured.” [Del Mar Times, 2/22/20]

“Maryott doesn’t offer many details about his policy plans, but he does tout a platform of fighting for border security, pushing science-based policies to protect the environment, lowering the national debt and making permanent the lower and middle income tax rates included in Trump’s 2017 plan. That’s earned him endorsements from major GOP organizations and leaders, including the California Republican Party and former Gov. Pete Wilson.” [Orange County Register, 2/21/20]

BRIAN MARYOTT: WATER CARRIER FOR WASHINGTON REPUBLICANS

Can’t Get Enough of Health Care Repeal

Republican and former big bank executive, Brian Maryott’s campaign has been heavy on platitudes and Washington talking points without much substance to back it up. But Maryott has always revealed just enough to show us that he stands firmly on the wrong side of issues the Southern Californians care about.

After his abysmal campaign in 2018, Maryott has put his dogmatic support for repealing the Affordable Care Act and undermining our health care system front and center. The approach Maryott supports is expected to increase insurance premiums by nearly 18% in California, jeopardize health insurance for 47,000 people in California’s 49th district, while imposing an age tax on seniors, and doing nothing to lower the price of prescription drugs.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Levin has championed legislation to ensure that that individuals with pre-existing conditions receive the health care they need and that middle-class families can afford the growing costs and premiums of employer-sponsored health coverage. From day one in Congress, Levin has been working tirelessly to address the challenges of securing and affording quality health care coverage for Southern California families.

All In On Tax Hikes For California Homeowners

Maryott has championed the Washington Republican Tax Scam that has fleeced California homeowners and families. In fact, Maryott hasn’t even flinched, as families in CA-49 feel the pinch of this aptly labeled “screw California” bill.

The tax bill Maryott supports has caused nearly one million Californians to pay $12 billion more in higher taxes. Experts have warned that Californians could now face “double taxation” due to the GOP Tax Scam. Families in Orange County and the GOP Tax Scam made it worse that served as a “hit to home shoppers” and puts “home ownership even further out of reach for families” in California.

Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Levin has worked diligently from day one to fight for the families of Southern California with a laser focused on getting results for homeowners by championing bipartisan legislation to that would help families who have lost thousands in savings come tax season.

Trump and Washington GOP’s Congressional Lackey

After his disastrous and failed first bid for California’s 49th congressional district, Maryott has stayed true to his obedience to President Trump.

This is in spite of the voters of CA-49 rejecting Trump by 7 points the last time they had a chance. But none of this has electoral reality has phased Maryott. That’s because Maryott’s obedience to Trump goes beyond supporting the Washington Republican agenda on health care and taxes.

Maryott opposes common sense gun violence prevention legislation that would keep guns out of the hands of suspected terrorists. On the critical issue of immigration in this Southern California district, Maryott has also lined up with extreme Republicans like Trump, calling for a wall along the southern border and maintaining that it’s a matter of national security.

From taxes on working families, to a deep embrace of the Washington Republican health care agenda, to Trump’s immigration and gun agenda that endangers California families, it is clear that Maryott is on the wrong side of the most important issues for voters in this Southern California district. That’s a sharp contrast with Mike Levin, who has kept his focus on the issues impacting his community: from bluff collapse to nuclear waste at San Onofre.

PATH TO VICTORY

California’s 49th Congressional District is an affluent, college-educated swing district that is trending increasingly Democratic. Despite its one time 7-point Republican registration advantage which is now down to 1-point, the district voted for Hillary Clinton by 7-points in 2016 and elected Levin by 13-points in 2018.

After spending nearly $1 million of his own funds in 2018 and turning in an 8th place finish to end with 3 points in the primary, Maryott’s electoral efforts in 2020 appear to the voters as foolhardy at best. And beyond being happy to take on and carry water for Washington Republicans’ most out of step talking points, Maryott has not shown he can raise the resources needed or align a message that resonates with the voters in California’s 49th in order to compete.

As suburban voters across the country – especially in districts with high college attainment – have drifted away from the Republican Party, this deeply suburban district anchored by along California’s coastline has shown that Democrats have the winning economic message on kitchen table issues especially when they have representation, like Mike Levin, who shows them he is working to deliver for the district, day in and day out.
