The Case Against Jack Martins

Tonight marks the beginning of the general election in New York’s 3rd Congressional District between Tom Suozzi and Jack Martins.

Martins’ extreme conservative voting record in Albany – and his willingness to back his party’s toxic presidential nominee, Donald Trump – have only made matters worse for him in a district that voted for President Obama twice.

In contrast, Tom Suozzi will continue to focus on creating jobs, making college more affordable and fighting to expand the middle-class in Long Island.

SKELOS APOLOGIST

Martins has come under well-deserved fire for his ties to former New York State Senator Dean Skelos and remaining “one of Skelos’s most vocal supporters” even after Skelos’ corruption came to light. Here are a couple more examples of Martins’s steadfast loyalty to a crooked Albany politician:

  • While presiding over the State Senate, he refused to greenlight efforts to strip Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos of his position in the Senate leadership after his arrest on federal corruption charges.
  • Martins co-signed a statement with other lawmakers arguing that Skelos should remain in power, despite his corruption trial.

It’s clear that voters want a change in the way business is done in Washington, and if Skelos Apologist Jack Martins can’t even stand up to crooked politicians in Albany who enrich themselves then it’s clear he is cut from the same cloth.

CONSERVATIVE CHAMPION

Jack Martins conservative views are at odds with the values and priorities of Long Island middle-class families.

Martins refused to support the Women’s Equality Act because of his opposition to abortion rights.

Whereas an overwhelming majority of New Yorkers back marriage equality, Martins opposed even extending marriage rights to same-sex couples.

PARTY OF TRUMP

Donald Trump will have a disastrous impact on Martins’s re-election chances.

Martins has already jumped on the Trump train, telling reporters in May that he’d back Trump as his party’s nominee.

President Obama won this district two times. Last year, Democrats sizably won a county-wide race for District Attorney in a major upset in an off-cycle year.

New York’s 3rd Congressional District is comprised of moderates, suburban voters, women, young people, and seniors who want a sensible leader that will focus on their priorities and deliver results.

Martins’ support for Trump indicates that there is no daylight between Martins and Trump – whether it is Trump’s reckless views that could tank our economy or dangerous rhetoric that makes our country less safe.

CONCLUSION

Jack Martins is headed for a loss because he is an out-of-touch, scandal-ridden politician – and a known Trump supporter – in a district that President Obama won in 2008 and 2012, and now has 41,629 more registered Democrats than Republicans.
