Casperson Schmoozing with Washington Insiders during DPS Vote

Michigan’s 1st District candidate Tom Casperson spent a decade voting against middle-class families in Lansing. Now we can add education of Michigan children to the list of things Casperson is willing to ignore while pursuing his own interests as a career politician.

(Already on the list was the outright abdication of responsibility on the part of Governor Snyder during the Flint water crisis; Casperson told Snyder’s critics that they had “poison in their hearts.”)

Yesterday, while the Michigan State Senate voted on a landmark bipartisan bill to fund Detroit Public Schools, Casperson was in Washington, DC – raising money for his congressional campaign at what the NRCC touted as their “biggest fundraiser of the year.”

“I wonder what Michigan teachers and schoolchildren think of Tom Casperson skipping out on them for the ‘unique opportunity’ to schmooze with Washington insiders and donors over filet mignon?” asked DCCC spokeswoman Sacha Haworth. “I’m sure these under-funded schools aren’t smiling at the NRCC’s boastful reports of raising more than $20 million when parents are fighting for every penny to educate their kids.”

The lone Senator not present during today’s Detroit Public Schools (DPS) reform vote was in Washington D.C. for the National Republic Congressional Committee (NRCC) annual dinner.

Sen. Tom CASPERSON (R-Escanaba), who is running in the 1st Congressional District, attended the dinner with departing U.S. Rep. Dan BENISHEK (R-Crystal Falls), whose seat he is seeking.

“He doesn’t make it a habit to miss votes, but he had a unique opportunity,” said Casperson staffer Marty FITTANTE.

Sacha HAWORTH of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) said that “Clearly, Lansing politician Tom Casperson isn’t all that concerned about the future of education in Michigan, considering he’s currently in D.C. raising money with the NRCC for the next job on the career ladder.

“Maybe Casperson wasn’t worried about missing the vote considering his financial backers, the DeVos family, were lobbying against it?”
