Caught in the Act: Kevin Kiley Committing Massive Campaign Finance Violations, According to Former FEC Chair

Former FEC Chair: “I’ve never seen anything quite this excessive, honestly.”

This weekend, the Los Angeles Times released a troubling report outlining serious accusations of large-scale campaign finance violations by California Republican Kevin Kiley – including a Federal Election Commission complaint filed by the former chair of the FEC herself. The detailed complaint alleges that the California Republican has been skirting federal election laws by “excessively us[ing] campaign funds to support” a ballot measure that he’s improperly treating as “an extension of his congressional campaign.”

Ann Ravel, who served as chair of the Federal Election Commission from 2013 to 2017, alleges that Kiley’s unusual involvement with the initiative “makes it an extension of his congressional campaign and is subject to the $5,000 contribution limit,” and yet the Kiley-induced initiative received “various contributions… totaling upwards of several millions of dollars.”

The extent of Kiley’s alleged campaign finance violations are so severe that the former FEC Chair warned that she’d “never seen anything quite this excessive.”

DCCC Spokesperson Dan Gottlieb:
“These massive alleged attempts to skirt campaign finance laws embody who Kevin Kiley really is: a self-serving politician who believes the rules every other public official needs to follow simply don’t apply to him – and that California voters wouldn’t take notice. This debacle is yet another troubling example of Kiley’s pattern and practice of benefiting his own career at the expense of Northern California families. Voters will continue to be made aware of his crooked games, and they’ll vote him out this November.”
